Soy and Breast Cancer
Research Study shows the more soy protein we have in our diets the better for breast cancer survival!
Over the years we have all read conflicting reports about the benefits of Soy in our diets. Some news has been scary. Other reports have been most positive. Consequently, it was most reassuring to see the results of a major study released in the December 9, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that studied the intake of soy protein in patients who had breast cancer. This study looked at over 5,000 patients and found that those individuals who had the highest intake of soy protein and isoflavones they contain, had the longest survival and the lowest risk of breast cancer recurrence. This study has defined the use of soy foods that are rich in isoflavones, a major group of phytoestrogens, should be encouraged.
"Phyotestrogens? I thought they were a problem for breast cancer patients?"
Phytoetrogens have an estrogen-like effect and there has always been a concern in consuming these foods when you had breast cancer. Therefore, it is reassuring to learn that there have been serveral studies that have shown that these foods can actually DECREASE the risk of breast cancer. And now, better news still! The 2009 study has shown that even if you have cancer and are taking drugs like tamoxifen, that you should actually be encouraged to consume soy protein containing isoflavones.
"What type of soy protein is recommended?"
A very important question! After doing my research into various soy products available in the health stores, and doing the all-important taste tests (who wants to eat or drink something that is not delicious!) I was introduced to a really healthy and yummy range of foods high in soy isoflavones. They are the Nutrimeal drink mixes and high-quality energy bars (delicious meal replacements and snacks) manufactured by the nutritional research company that is a world-leader in cellular nutrition. I have included these soy-based foods in my
Breast Cancer Wellness Diet.
I continue to enjoy them every day, and I find they are an important part of my quest to maintain a healthy weight. All are non-GM (not genetically modified) of course! Another bonus - these drinks and bars have a very low glycemic index rating, so are suitable for diabetics, and are ideal for weight-loss programs. Like a lot of great products on the market today, these drinks and bars are only available direct from the company itself, so you won't find them in your supermarket or on the shelf in your local health store. To make it easy to get these high-quality products, I have set up a dedicated Hello Wellness website to enable you to
order direct from the company
at wholesale and less by registering on the site as a Customer (and it's absolutely FREE to join as a member). Which flavours do you prefer? Dutch Chocolate, Wild Strawberry, French Vanilla? I love them all!
